The Sprouts Box
Local and organic produce delivered to your
door by bicycle
The Sprouts Box is back for the 2009/2010 school year.
If you are living on campus and are interested in receiving a weekly
delivery (by bicycle!) of fresh, local, organic, and
reasonably-priced produce, we are now taking subscriptions for
Term 2.
What is The Sprouts Box?
Sprouts is teaming up with the AMS Bike Co-op to offer a weekly delivery of
fresh, local, organic produce to campus residents by bicycle. Last year this
was a pilot project and it was very successful. This year will
be the first year we are officially running this program. We have decided to
keep it simple this term and offer this service to residents in Gage,
Thunderbird, Fairview, Acadia, and Marine Drive.
Why Offer a Green Box?
Through many initiatives, Sprouts has endeavoured to make healthy, sustainably produced food affordable and accessible to the campus community. We’re offering The Sprouts Box to further pursue
this goal, and support local food
producers practising sustainable farming.
What's in a Sprouts Box?
Sprouts Boxes come with assorted local, seasonal produce such as
apples, pears, beets, carrots, radishes, mushrooms, potatoes, cabbage,
celeriac, leeks, sunchokes, sprouts, herbs, parsnips, and winter
squash. The boxes aren't customizable, but instead we offer the option
of two sizes so that you can receive the amount of food
that's appropriate for your home.
- A small box contains assorted fruits and vegetables
(all local and organic, of course). This box is recommended for
households of 2-3 people. The exact contents varies from week to
week, but as an example, it might contain: 2lb cabbage, 2lb onions, 1
box of alfalfa sprouts, 1lb sunchokes, 2lb apples, 1lb pears.
- A large box generally contains the same variety of
fruits and veggies as found in the small box, but in greater quantity.
It is generally recommended for households of 3 of more people. As
with the small box, its exact contents vary from week to week. As an
example, one week it might contain: 2lb cabbage, 3lb onions, 1 box
alfalfa sprouts, 1 box clover sprouts, 1lb sunchokes, 2lb apples, 1lb
pears.
All subscribers also receive a "paperless" weekly newsletter that
includes news and updates from Sprouts, a price breakdown of the
produce they've received that week, and a recipe that features a few
of those items.
How much does it cost?
Small boxes are $15/week and large boxes are $20/week for approximately ten weeks.
Subscriptions require that students pay up front before deliveries begin.
It'll be the best couple hundred dollars you spend for the term!
Note there will be no deliveries during the reading weeks this term.
